Good news and two more birthday gifts

Hello friends!
Wow, what a long week this has been. And I still have lots of work to do this weekend! I do hope I'll manage to make it to the sewing machine though. I can see her from the corner of my eye, begging me to come and pay her due respects!

I DO have very good news though! I had my eyes set on a specific flat for little sis, but I was forcing myself not to hope too much as there were many candidates for it... Now guess what - the landlady chose us! I first visited the flat on Monday, with MANY other candidates - my sister couldn't come as she was working late at the hospital, but since it was ideally situated and very good value (well, for Paris anyway! ), we thought it was worth my visiting it alone. I really thought it was the loveliest flat we visited - new, well isolated, very well equipped, cute and roomy enough for one; besides, it's in a nice neighbourhood, 2 minutes from a strategic metro junction (which is essential for my sister, as she changing hospitals every 6 months for the first 2 years of her internship); and it's only 15 minutes from my own place, which I'm VERY happy about! In fact, it's on the other side of the Canal Saint-Martin from my flat; for those of you who know that part of Paris, it's a very pleasant neighbourhood - friendly, animated, though not posh . I tried to make the best impression I could on the landlady last Monday, and told her that my sister would definitely want to visit it whenever possible. Which we just did - and voilà! I still can't believe she chose us (I caught a glimpse of her notebook and there were something like 15 candidates listed)! Woohoo! My sister will have the flat on March 15. I am so happy for her - I thought we'd be flat-hunting for several long, stressful weeks. What a great pick-me-up for her!!

Now, as promised, here are the two other gifts I made for Becky and Karen...

Karen is a heart collector and since she likes natural tones, so I made her this heart in beige, cream and brown:

I really couldn't decide whether it was pretty or not... But I thought I'd better send it to Karen anyway, and let her decide. Fortunately, Karen said she likes it! Karen, I do hope you didn't say it just to have me stop worrying!

And here's the pillow I stitched for Becky:

The design is by Virginie Goussé of C Mon Monde ("It's my world"); she's a new French designer whose naive, whimsical creations really appeal to me. I also enjoy following her blog, and she offered this design as a freebie to her readers. I do hope you go see her creations; I know she is preparing some new designs for Spring right now. You can see them here: C mon monde I and C mon monde II. I just saw she released two new designs: la fée des Lilas and a very pretty May design!

Here's a close-up on the embroidery:

Stitched over two on 32-count natural linen

The red is an Atalie silk thread in Beaune (Beaune being a wine-producing town! ). It was the very first time I stitched with silk, and wow! I loved it! The house was stitched with a GAST in Peacock (thanks again, Carol! Your gifts sure go a looong way, and I think of you each time I use one of the threads you sent me last Spring! ); the yellow is simply Anchor floss. Virginie added a heart-shaped button to her own piece, but since I didn't have one at hand, I made a lace heart on my e-machine. I then sewed some narrow lace all around the design, to match the heart.

The backing fabric is a deep red embroidered fabric:

It's in the same range as the backing fabric I used for Karen's and Becky's quilts:

I love that fabric, but since it was a slippery poly, of a very different weight from the cotton quilt top, I had a hell of a time sewing it to the quilt top! I do hope Becky and Karen don't mind the slight irregularities!

Now... I have to confess that Becky's quilt has ribbon loops to hang the quilt - but Karen's has a sleeve.

Only while making Karen's quilt did I realize that a sleeve would be more appropriate for a wallhanging of that size. Unfortunately, Becky's quilt was already on its way to her... I wish I'd though about it earlier, dear Becky... I hope the wallhanging hangs fine nonetheless. Big (((hugs))) to you!

I also have a happy dance to share with you - l'Ange du sommeil is all done! But I don't have more time tonight - I'm not finished with my work for today, and haven't had dinner yet (it's 8 pm)... A crazy week I tell you! But also, such a happy week.

Everyone enjoy your weekend!

Oh please, have some more faith in yourself! Two lovely young ladies such as yourself and your sister? Of course you had no problem getting the flat. I'm sure that your sweetness, honesty and trustworthiness shone through, making it a very easy decision for the landlady! :D

BTW, the heart you did for Karen is very cute, as is Becky's pillow. You are just such a talented and generous friend! Have a wonderful weekend and I hope that you are able to spend some quality time with your sewing machine. ;)

I honestly love the heart and it is hanging from the rail above our bed (on my side!) It is the perfect colour for our bedroom, so please don't worry any more - I love it!! The pillow you made for Becky is really cute too.

Hope you manage to find time to relax this weekend - you deserve it!

Take care :)

WooHoo!!!! Congratulations to you and your sister!!! Only 15 minutes away from each other...this is great!!!! Oh how I wish I lived closer to my sister!! Maybe someday. The wall hangings are incredible. I wish I lived only 15 minutes from you!! LOL I would pay you for sewing lessons!!! :)
I'm painting my Living Room a fresh spring green colour and am thinking about trying my hand at a small wall hanging to hang over my desk. I have had a very heavy and dark tapestry hanging above my desk but I need to lighten things up a bit. I figured since I can't have a window in front of my desk I would create some sort of "floral landscape" wall hanging!!! This will all take a few months to get off the fround but I'm looking forward to it!!

Hugs and agin congrats to your sister!!!

Dear Isabelle,
I am so thrilled and happy for you and your sister. Living in and around London I know how hard it is to find a good place to live keeping in mind all the good points in a big city.
Your gifts are beautiful stitched as always. I am glad you are able to share it with us all from time to time. But do take time out to relax so that you don't get stressed. Speak to you soon

Rejoicing with you that God had favor on you and your sister in the flat-foraging fun. (*Couldn't resist the alliteration.) I'm sure your sweetness went a long way in helping her decide.

Your gifts are beautiful, as always. You know I am partial to valentine or heart shapes, too, and so I love both things you've made.

BTW, I think I have found a new contact for more Katrina Kits. My son's lacrosse coach is going down to Louisiana in June. I'll be talking to him soon. There's still utter devastation where he's going to be going with a group of Christians (maybe including my son) for more de-and reconstruction. I'll email you soon.

I'm very happy for both you and your sister on the flat! I have lived in a big city and I know that finding something suitable is very difficult. And she's close to you which I think makes the flat much more attractive. I hope this helps her situation . Very good news , thank you for sharing.

Its great news you found a flat for your sister, Isabelle - great news. Sounds as if it is in a nice spot and I am sure she will soon feel at home there.
Like you, I am bogged down with work at the moment and finding it difficult to keep up with my blog + stitching when I have so much research work to do. But I like to divert onto leisure activities as it keeps me sane! :-) Bye for now xx PS I have a Happy Dance to show on my blog next week as I finished my Adam and Eve sampler today - just waiting for Mike to get back home with the digital camera on Monday afternoon! xxx

WOWEY!!! Such excitement for both you and your sis. I'm real happy for you both. Flat sounds great, and such a bonus to be able to be close together. I like the pillows...the heart one isn't my color (not a beige person), but the detail is wonderful. YOu do very nice work. All you gifts are made with such special attention your friends probably claim extra birthdays to get more handmade gifts from you..hehe
I haven't had my sewing machine out in a year, or possibly a little longer, haven't quilted in an even longer time. I need a room I can put all my jazz in so I could do a bit of this and that without the time and energy involved in stopping one craft to get out all thats needed for another.

Have a good week.
Sandy

Sorry for not posting comments for a while ... I'm soooo behind on my blog reading, and I've missed seeing what you've been up to. I have to admit, I've read your blog briefly beforehand, so I didn't miss out totally, but I refused to mark your posts as 'read' until I'd had chance to read properly and comment! :) I'm glad to hear you managed to find a lovely flat for your sister - after flat-hunting in Melbourne not that long ago, it is a truly depressing thing to have to do, seeing the flea-pits that some landlords are renting for an amazing amount of money, so I'm glad you've finally got that behind you now :) And I have to say your quilted wallhangings for Karen and Becky are absolutely stunning! You did a fantastic job on them, as always :D And your little pillows are adorable too ... I'm now off to check out that new French designer ... after I catch up with the rest of your blog :D
